Saint Henry

Patron Saint of kings, Benedictine Oblates, handicapped people, and those rejected from religious orders Invoked against sterility

Saint Henry II was born into nobility as the son of the Duke of Bavaria. He received an excellent Christian education under the canons of the Cathedral of Hildesheim and was mentored by Bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg, who would later be declared a saint. At the age of twenty-two, Henry succeeded his father as Duke of Bavaria. Soon after, he married Cunigunde of Luxembourg, who also became a saint. The couple had no children and are believed to have freely embraced a life of mutual continence.

After the death of Holy Roman Emperor Otto III in 1002, Henry sought the imperial throne. Although he initially lacked the full support of the German nobility, he was crowned King of Germany and continued to pursue recognition as Holy Roman Emperor. In 1014, Pope Benedict VIII crowned him Emperor in Rome, affirming his rightful place as ruler of the Holy Roman Empire.

Henry was deeply devoted to God and maintained a close partnership with the Church throughout his reign. He worked to appoint holy and faithful bishops, reform the German episcopate, establish new dioceses, and strengthen the Church's mission by granting bishops both spiritual and temporal authority. His generosity toward the Church was so remarkable that even some of his relatives considered it excessive. Nevertheless, Henry believed that his foremost responsibility as emperor was to uphold the faith, strengthen the Church, and live a life of charity. He was also known for his mercy, forgiving those who rebelled against him and restoring peace after conflicts. A man of prayer, Henry frequently spent long hours in churches, had a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, faithfully received the sacraments, and regularly prayed the Divine Office.

One of Saint Henry's greatest legacies was his commitment to renewing monastic life. At a time when many monasteries had drifted from the ideals of the Rule of Saint Benedict due to political influence and worldly ambition, Henry supported efforts to restore authentic monastic discipline. He collaborated closely with Abbot Odilo of Cluny, who would later become a saint, in advancing these reforms. Among his most enduring achievements was the establishment of the Diocese of Bamberg and the construction of its cathedral and monastery, which he envisioned as a spiritual center for Germany, spreading the faith and strengthening the Church throughout the region.

Among all the Holy Roman Emperors, Saint Henry II remains the only one officially canonized by the Church. Although he lived amid political struggles, military conflicts, and the privileges of imperial life, he consistently placed God above power and personal ambition. He used his authority and resources to promote the Church, defend the faith, and serve others with humility and generosity. His life continues to inspire rulers, leaders, and all those entrusted with influence or wealth to exercise their responsibilities with integrity, charity, and unwavering devotion to God.

Reflection

O glorious Saint Henry, faithful ruler and humble servant of God, you used your authority, wealth, and influence not for personal gain but for the glory of God and the good of His people. Through your deep love for the Church, your devotion to prayer, and your generous charity, you became a shining example of holiness in public life.

Pray for us, that we may always seek God's will above our own ambitions. Help those entrusted with leadership to govern with wisdom, justice, humility, and compassion. Inspire us to use the gifts and blessings God has given us to serve others, strengthen our faith, and build His Kingdom here on earth.

Obtain for us the grace to remain faithful in times of trial, merciful toward those who wrong us, and steadfast in prayer. May we, like you, place our trust completely in Christ and grow in love for His Church each day.

Saint Henry II, patron of leaders, rulers, and those who seek to serve God through their work, pray for us.

Amen.
