Saint Januarius, Bishop and Martyr

In Luke 8:4-15, Jesus tells us about the seed that falls on different kinds of soil. The seed is the Word of God, and the difference is not in the seed but in the heart that receives it. This makes me think about how sometimes we attend Holy Mass almost out of routine. We stand, sit, kneel, respond, and listen to the readings, but our minds may already be somewhere else. We are physically present, but perhaps we have not prepared the soil of our hearts to truly listen.I remember once asking my wife if we should transfer to another church because most of the time I had difficulty understanding the priest's homily. Her answer gave me something to reflect on: “If you cannot understand the homily, keep your heart in reflective mode and try to understand the Gospel itself.” That stayed with me. The homily can certainly help us understand God's Word, but our encounter with the Gospel does not depend entirely on whether the preacher connects with us. God has already spoken through His Word, and we can ask, “Lord, what are You telling me through this Gospel today?”Perhaps this is one way of cultivating good soil. Before Mass begins, we can quiet ourselves and simply ask God for the grace to listen. During the Gospel, instead of hearing familiar words and thinking, “I already know this story,” we can listen as though Jesus is speaking personally to us. Even one verse, one phrase, or one word may be the seed God wants us to carry home.Jesus tells us that the good soil represents those who hear the Word, embrace it with a good and generous heart, and bear fruit through perseverance. We may attend hundreds or even thousands of Masses in our lifetime, but the invitation remains the same each time: do not just hear the Word, allow it to take root. Sometimes preparing the soil begins with a very simple prayer before Mass: “Lord, open my heart. I am listening.”
