Sunday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time

The Canaanite woman comes to Jesus carrying something every parent can understand: the pain of seeing her child suffer. She cries out for help, but at first Jesus seems silent. Even the disciples want her sent away. Yet she stays. She keeps asking, keeps trusting, and humbles herself before the Lord until Jesus finally tells her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.”

Sometimes our prayer life feels exactly like this. We pray for our family, finances, healing, work, relationships, or a problem that seems to have no solution, and God appears silent. We begin to wonder, “Lord, are You listening?” The Canaanite woman reminds us that silence does not necessarily mean absence. Faith sometimes means staying with Jesus even when we do not yet understand what He is doing.

Her story also challenges us as a Church and community. She was an outsider, someone others could easily dismiss, yet Jesus allowed her faith to become an example for everyone. There may be people around us who feel unwelcome, judged, or forgotten. May we never become the disciples who say, “Send her away.” Instead, may our communities help people come closer to Jesus, especially those who are desperately looking for hope.
