The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary had just received life-changing news from the angel, yet she did not focus only on herself. She hurried to visit Elizabeth and brought Jesus with her. Elizabeth immediately recognized something special: “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” Mary’s faith was not passive. She trusted God, said yes, and then allowed that yes to become service to another person.

As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we see where that faithful yes ultimately leads. Mary’s Assumption reminds us that our journey with God does not end with the struggles, sacrifices, aging, or even death that we experience here. Her life points us toward our own hope of eternal life with God. Mary was an ordinary young woman who allowed God to do extraordinary things through her because she trusted Him.

Perhaps that is her invitation to us today. We do not need to understand everything before saying yes to God. Like Mary, we simply trust, serve, and continue walking. And when life becomes uncertain, we can remember the words of her Magnificat: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” God has been faithful before, and He will remain faithful to the end.
